Comparing common methods for assessing understory light availability in shaded-perennial agroforestry systems

چکیده
Regulating the shade provided by overstory trees is important in the management of shaded-perennial agroforestry systems. In order to compare the merits of commonly used light-assessment techniques that could potentially be useful to farmers and extensionists and to quantify the extent of shading in multistrata agroforestry systems, understory photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was measured beneath 28 single-species and four mixed-species stands of trees in Costa Rica. Stand age varied from 1.5 to 20 years, with uniform age trees within stands. Canopy gap fraction was estimated by three methods in each stand: densiometer, visual index, and hemispherical photography. The gap fractions so derived were compared as estimators of mid-day PAR transmission. Canopy architectural parameters such as crown height, crown diameter, canopy coverage, and stand density were measured and compared in regression models for their ability to predict PAR transmission. As expected, stand characteristics alone did not accurately predict PAR transmission. Of the techniques, gap fractions using densiometers were the most predictive, except under conditions of low stand density (<500 trees per hectare) and open canopies, where estimates from hemispherical photograph were better. Shade assessment using densiometers may provide an adequate, dependable guide for overstory management in multistrata systems and could be useful to farmers willing to adjust their management techniques. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Resource Limitations Influence Growth and Vigor of Idaho Fescue, a Common Understory Species in Pacific Northwest Ponderosa Pine Forests
Alterations in under-canopy resource availability associated with elevated ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl.) abundance can negatively influence understory vegetation. Experimental evidence linking under-canopy resource availability and understory vegetation is scarce. Yet this information would be beneficial in developing management strategies to recover desired understory species. We tes...
متن کاملCarbon storage in soil size fractions under two cacao agroforestry systems in Bahia, Brazil.
Shaded perennial agroforestry systems contain relatively high quantities of soil carbon (C) resulting from continuous deposition of plant residues; however, the extent to which the C is sequestered in soil will depend on the extent of physical protection of soil organic C (SOC). The main objective of this study was to characterize SOC storage in relation to soil fraction-size classes in cacao (...
متن کاملEffects of reproduction methods and overstory species composition on understory light availability in longleaf pine–slash pine ecosystems
The restoration of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) ecosystem types ranging from xeric uplands to hydric flatwoods is the goal of significant management efforts in the southeastern United States. Overstory species composition across ecosystem types varies from pure longleaf to mixed species stands, with slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) becoming more predominant on hydric soils, though ...
متن کاملForests are not immune to plant invasions : phenotypic plasticity and 1 local adaptation allow Prunella vulgaris to colonize a temperate 2 evergreen rainforest
1 In the South American temperate evergreen rainforest (Valdivian forest), invasive plants 2 are mainly restricted to open sites, being rare in the shaded understory. This is 3 consistent with the notion of closed-canopy forests as communities relatively resistant 4 to plant invasions. However, alien plants able to develop shade tolerance could be a 5 threat to this unique forest. Phenotypic pl...
متن کاملEffects of Understory Foliage on Patterns of Light Attenuation near the Forest Floor1
Understory light availability is an important component of the environment for canopy tree seedlings. Understanding what generates variation in understory light availability represents one step in understanding processes regulating seedling banks, the beginning capital of regeneration in tropical forests. Near the forest floor, variation in light availability may be strongly influenced by the s...
